Rough Framing Barn Door

Depending on your opening the lumber width will be 6 to 8 wide. There are three simple rules to framing rough openings efficiently. So if you have a bedroom door that is 30 wide which is considered a 2 6 or 2 6 door just add 2 to the width and frame it 32 wide. Frame the rough opening to a height that is 1 5 taller than the door that you have selected.

If the door is 7 tall frame the opening 7 1 5. And avoid toenailing when possible. If the doorway has moldings measure from outside edge to outside edge to determine the proper door width add about 4 to 6 inches to your measurement. You should add 2 1 2 to the height of the actual door.

This will give you room to space the door frame off of the sub floor. Bring the door inside and hang the rollers on the track. There s a peg in the top of each door hinge just pull it out or grab a hammer to help knock it out. Each frame is powder coated with a finish that will endure the test of time.

The door and hardware is longer than a regular door and it is easy to misjudge the length and balance meaning it s easy to bump into things. It should be tall enough so that when it s hung on the track there is about 1 2 inch of space between the bottom of the door and the floor. To finish the opening cut the header and jambs from 2 lumber. Using a tape measure begin at the left edge of the opening and measure straight across to the right edge.
