There is an oil seal on both ends of the crankshaft where it passes through the crankcase.

From what i have read it is the crankshaft seal that is leaking.
An oil leak in your mower like one in your car might mean that oil is oozing through barriers that should contain it.
The seal is pressed into the engine castings and forms a seal against the crankshaft.
Check to see exactly where oil is originating.

If you tip a lawnmower greater than 15 degrees with its carburetor pointing downward then oil can leak from the crankcase and into the breather tube.

If your lawnmower is leaking oil it could have a bad crankshaft oil seal.
If it is coming out of the tube itself the tube may be cracked or damaged.
As the crankshaft rotates it will wear the seal.
If the oil leak is coming from the bottom of the engine near the base it is likely because of a problem in the oil tank or oil sump.
Pull the oil dipstick out of the engine and reinsert it firmly.
